November 2010 - Gearbox

It had always been necessary for me to double declutch when changing down from third to second gear to avoid a noisy and troublesome gear change, so it seemed like a sensible idea to investigate the cause for this whilst the gearbox was out of the car. With the gearbox on the bench for cleaning it was apparent that the front oil seal was unserviceable and would need replacing. The second gear synchromesh ring was found to be very badly worn and was replaced with a new one. All seals and gaskets were replaced during the rebuild as a matter of course, and new rubber mounts were also sourced and fitted.
