Life changed in 1939 when World War Two began in Europe. In Britain, unemployment disappeared when men were called up and sent to war. No new houses were built during the six years of war and due to scarcity of fixtures and fitings, many homes remained decorated and furnished in the 1930's style. To save on the unnecessary usage of materials, the government introduced a 'Utility' scheme that standardised the designs of furniture, clothing and household goods. I can remember much of the 'Utility' furniture and fittings being in use during my childhood and through the 1950's and even into the early 1960's.
